Marble bust at the "Musei Capitolini" Museum in Rome. (Photo S.B. Piperas, Febr. 2001).

COIN OF THE CITY-STATE OF ERESOS HONORING ITS CHILD, THE POETESS SAPPHO. The obverse shows Sappho sitting on a chair resting her left arm on her Lyre, whereas she stretches out her right arm holding a plectrum or a papyrus. It bares the inscription "SAPSFO". The reverse shows a bearded statue type of God Hermes, standing probably on a vessel prow, holding in his right hand his Caduceus, whereas in his left hand he holds the Cornucopia, symbol of the city's richness. It bares the ethnic legend "ERESI". This coin was found in Eresos and was delivered to the Eresos Museum in August 2002, by Mrs G. G. Karakoussi. There are two more such coins in the Numismatic Museum of Berlin, but not that well preserved.
